Color Spectrum Network Expands
Capabilities With Dual Presses

Marietta, Georgia – Print media industry leader Heidelberg recently installed a seven-color Speedmaster CD 102 press with coater, extended delivery and ultra-violet (UV) capabilities at Color Spectrum Network, a high-end manufacturer of printed folding cartons located in Marietta, Georgia. The new press places Color Spectrum Network as the only folding carton company in Georgia to offer UV printing options in all seven units.

The new press supplements an existing six-color Speedmaster CD 102 that was installed in early 2003. Gil Bonilla, president and owner of Color Spectrum Network, said the company purchased the new seven-color press in order to increase the shop’s print offerings and to accommodate customer demand for inline UV capabilities.

“We began taking in more requests for jobs with UV needs, specifically on unique substrates like foil boards and plastics,” said Bonilla. “We have been so pleased with our existing Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102, that we knew adding another one with expanded capabilities like UV would allow us to handle more complex jobs, increase profitability and maintain a continued focus on our model of delivered product in seven calendar days or less.”

Offering printers a high degree of automation and cost-effectiveness, the new Speedmaster CD 102 drupa 2004 generation has been fully redesigned and now includes a number of ergonomic refinements, including a new feeder, delivery and an advanced, easy-to-handle coating unit.

A further example of Heidelberg’s leadership in the fast-growing UV segment is the integration of UV dryers into the total press concept. Not only are all the dryer systems freely movable throughout the press, they are also totally controllable via the CP 2000 touch screen – no additional controls are needed. In addition, the delivery dryers, which include infrared, hot-air and UV, are all easily accessible for cleaning or service from the operator side of the press, simply by unlocking them and pulling them out. All electrical, water and air connections are made automatically. In the case of Color Spectrum Network, these new features have made high-quality production easier, making it possible for the shop to significantly increase its number of UV-printed jobs.

“The productivity performance of Heidelberg’s Speedmaster CD 102 has been elevated by up to 15 percent due to the totally redesigned feeder, delivery and dryers, which enables our customers to accommodate the growing need for higher running speeds,” said Steen Jensen, senior vice president of product management for Heidelberg USA. “At the same time, the UV capabilities of the press meet the demand for more glossy or specialized coatings. Printers like Color Spectrum Network can print more unique jobs quicker with these options.”

With a guaranteed one-week turnaround for all its projects, Color Spectrum Network currently uses the new press to produce packaging work for the technology, sporting goods and cosmetics industries on materials that range from plastics to all grades of folding carton stock.

“So far, we’ve seen incredible results, and we expect to continue increasing our impressions in the future,” said Bonilla. “With the superior reliability, quality of print and efficiencies of our first Speedmaster CD 102 and with the new UV press, we continue to be able to meet our unique business model of a one-week turnaround on all jobs. With its inline UV coating solution, we can start die-cutting, embossing, foiling and gluing the day the job comes off the press. Now that’s production.”
